ACC/Big Ten Challenge

As a fan of the Big Ten the ACC/Big Ten Challenge is something I strongly look forward to each year! It gives me some perspective on how tough the Big Ten will be in their out of conference play and also gives me something to look forward to when conference play begins.

It’s a well known fact that the ACC has dominated this challenge. Winning 10 out of the 12 challenges.  The Big Ten’s only two victories have been won by only a single game and have taken place the last two seasons (2009-10 and 2010-11).  This is the first season where this challenge could end in a tie (12 games will be played between the two conferences. Six on November 29th and six more on November 30th).

I’m going to lay out my picks for the ACC/Big Ten matchups game by game and add some notes for games I think are bigger and that will be of more interest to viewers.

I strongly believe this season’s ACC/Big Ten Challenge will end in a draw.

Games of Note:

Michigan @ Virginia. I think this will be Michigan’s chance to show the nation what they’re made of this year.

Duke @ Ohio State. This will be a great game to watch no matter who the victor is.  I think Sullinger will be a handfull down low in the paint and will also have a dominating presence on the defensive end of the floor and lead the Buckeyes to victory.

Florida State @ Michigan State. The Spartans will win in a close matchup but will have the opportunity to prove all the doubters wrong about projected misfortunes this season.

Wisconsin @ North Carolina. Not many people see North Carolina losing a game this year. I project NC to win with the help of home court advantage but it’ll be a close game regardless. Don’t be surprised if the Badgers and Bo Ryan pull off the upset.

Hey Everyone,

It’s been a few days since I last posted.  Since my last post I attended the Minnesota vs Purdue game in West Lafayette.  I had a blast.  Purdue came out a little slow but you could tell Purdue was getting back to their old ways, playing solid tough defense and making shots to keep a slim lead.  At halftime the Boilers were up by 3 but I had confidence that they would open it up in the second half and send the gophers back to there little dams disappointed.

I was very pleased with the Boilermakers and had a great time watching them win the game.  However, tonight is the game I’m really excited for. I had a gut feeling that Purdue was going to win easy at home against Minnesota.  I was kind of right, they won but it wasn’t as easy as I thought it was going to be.  Tonight, however, will be a tough one. The Boiler senior class is currently 2-1 at the Kohl Center.  The Boilers seem to know how to win in Madison and I’m hoping they do the same.  Oh and have I mentioned that I will be decked out in my Purdue gear in the Wisconsin student section for tonight’s game? Well I will be and I hope I don’t get killed after Purdue pulls off the win.

I have much confidence after seeing my Purdue Boilermakers in person on Saturday and was able to see how they responded to Coach Painter during timeouts.  Being at the game gives so much more information about teams than watching on TV and I saw a lot of things that I really liked.  Purdue knows whats on the line tonight.  They need this win to maintain any chance of staying up with Ohio State.  They’ve had success in Madison at the Kohl Center and I look for it to be a much closer game than the rest of Wisconsin and America thinks it’s going to be.  I have much faith in Coach Painter and the senior class to get this team fired up and ready to go tonight.  JaJuan Johnson has already said they let one go against Ohio State in Columbus and they don’t want to let any other games go.  They understand the importance of this game and I think America will be in for a treat tonight.

Prediction: Purdue in a close game given the circumstances and importance of the game. Purdue 69 Scotty 67

Tennessee Upset?

Last night (Dec. 14th) the Tennessee Volunteers were toppled by the Oakland(Michigan) Golden Grizzlies.  Vol fans have every right to be upset with their teams’ performance against the Golden Grizzlies Tuesday night.  But, is this loss really a surprise to college basketball fans?

I’m going to admit that I hadn’t heard much about Oakland before this game other than they only loss to Michigan St. by 1 point only a few days ago.  As a Purdue fan I also knew that Oakland gave my Boilermakers a tough game.  Other than that I was just as clueless to who the Golden Grizzlies are.  Oakland was down at halftime against the Vols 50-39.  Is it surprising that they came back to win the game 89-82?  I don’t think it is.

Oakland is led my 5th year senior Keith Benson, 18.8ppg (had 26 points and 10 rebounds against Tennessee).  Having a 5th year senior as your leader always makes a coach feel warm and fuzzy inside.  Benson has plenty of game experience and confidence to lead his team when it’s crunch time.  Oakland was last years Summit League champs and they look to repeat their success and to earn another birth into the big dance in March.

Coach Greg Kempe has intentionally put his team through a tough schedule and their record shows for it (6-5).  They’ve already played 4 ranked teams; Purdue, Illinois, Michigan St., and Tennessee.  They also have currently ranked #2 Ohio State on their schedule.  Coach Kempe after the game was not surprised by his team’s victory over the Volunteers.  “We’re not scared of anybody, We weren’t intimidated by the No. 7 team in the country because we had just played Michigan State, and we should have won that game. We had just played Illinois, and we could have won that game. I think those are big and can help us”-Kempe.

Oakland is currently 21st overall in the nation in scoring, putting up 80.5 points per game.  They are also bringing in 40.7 rebounds a game, 26th in the nation.  Their success on the boards has led to many second chance opportunities to score.  Mix these two keys to success with their solid team defense and you have yourself a winning program.  Oakland held the Vols to shoot just under 35% in the second half, including a 5 minute drought where Tennessee didn’t score one point.

Oakland’s track record thus far is very impressive.  They are now 1-3 vs ranked opponents, are the returning Summit League Champs, are led by a 5th year senior, and are ranked in the top 30 in scoring and rebounds per game.  I wasn’t as shocked as some  may have been to watch the Volunteers fall to Oakland.  The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are definitely a team to keep an eye on come March.
